ACADIA NATIONAL PARK / Client: National Park Service / Mount Desert Island, Maine Rieley & Associates documented the history, construction, maintenance and use of 50 miles of carriage roads, bridges and gate lodges on Mount Desert Island, Maine. The Historic Resource Study received a national award in historic research from the American Society of Landscape Architects. A subsequent Cultural Landscape Report guided the restoration of all the roads. |

GAY MONT ("ROSE HILL") / Client: private / Fredericksburg, Virginia In conjunction with Tidewater Preservation, Inc. and The James River Institute for Archaeology, Inc., Rieley and Associates is working on a garden restoration plan for Gay Mont, a mid-nineteenth century country estate in Caroline County. The house will be restored to a private and livable home and the grounds will be returned to their once grand beauty. Based on landscape architect Arthur A. Shurcliff’s 1931 plan, and with information from archaeological and historical investigations in hand, Rieley and Associates will work with the new owners to design a garden that is reflective of the mid-nineteenth century, while taking into account maintenance requirements and their personal preferences. Rieley and Associates will produce an overall master plan as well as working drawings and specifications for the particular parts of the project to be constructed and planted at any time. |

THE JOSEPH MANIGAULT HOUSE / Client: The Charleston Museum / Charleston, South Carolina Rieley and Associates researched the history of this site and designed a Federal style garden based on a thorough assessment of historic surveys, maps, art, correspondence, and the garden plan designed by Margaret M. Barnwell. Construction documents included plans and details for new walks, a workyard with new access, brick walls, fences, gates, an outbuilding designed to reflect the style of the period, and a planting plan using plants known to be popular in that era. |

UPPER BRANDON PLANTATION / Client: The James River Corporation / Surry County, Virginia Rieley & Associates prepared a historic resource study for the gardens and grounds of this plantation on the James River. Included was a thorough assessment of historic surveys, maps, and correspondence, and an analysis of the relationship between the house and gardens. Construction documents included plans for a new entrance road, gates, and a gazebo designed to reflect the style of an existing octagonal smoke house. |

William D. Rieley serves as the Landscape Architect for The Garden Club of Virginia, a position he has held since 1998. In that capacity, he works at the direction of the Restoration Committee to prepare plans for new projects the Garden Club undertakes, and advises on projects previously completed where adjustments or new work is contemplated. BRUTON PARISH EPISCOPAL CHURCH / Williamsburg, Virginia Bruton Parish Church served as the center of political, religious and social life in the colonial capital, Williamsburg. For the Garden Club of Virginia and working with its partners in the project, the church and Colonial Williamsburg, Rieley & Associates designed a renovation that maintains the 18th century character of the churchyard, respects the requirements of an active congregation, and accommodates three million visitors a year. |

THE EXECUTIVE MANSION / Richmond, Virginia Charles F. Gillette designed the formal garden in the early 1950's for the late Governor and Mrs. Thomas Stanley. It first opened for Historic Garden Week in 1956. The Garden Club of Virginia undertook its restoration in 2000. Rieley & Associates, relied on archival information including Gillette’s own plans and records, and newspaper photographs of the garden at its original opening. |

HOLLINS UNIVERSITY, BEALE GARDEN / Roanoke, Virginia Landscape architect A. A. Farnham designed the Beale garden in 1930 to honor Lucy Preston Beale, a loyal 1864 Hollins graduate. In 2006, Rieley & Associates designed an extensive restoration of the garden for the Garden Club of Virginia. |

MARY WASHINGTON HOUSE / Fredericksburg, Virginia Rieley & Associates coordinated the construction of an arbor, fence and trellis based on the 1968 plans and details by Griswold, Winters & Swain. |

MARY WASHINGTON MONUMENT / Fredericksburg, Virginia The construction of this monument to his mother began after George Washington’s first visit to Fredericksburg after her death. On behalf of the Garden Club of Virginia, Rieley & Associates worked with the City of Fredericksburg to refurbish the Monument's setting. |

MONTPELIER / Orange County, Virginia On the behalf of the Garden Club of Virginia in 2008, Rieley & Associates coordinated work in the DuPont garden that included repointing the garden wall , restoring the gates, sculpture conservation, and adding perennials to the formal gardens. In 2009, the Garden Club added wrought iron railings to the existing garden steps and built new brick steps at the garden's lower entrance. Reconstruction of the garden wall will soon be underway. |

MOSES MYERS HOUSE / Norfolk, Virginia In 2003 the Garden Club asked Rieley & Associates to design an appropriate garden for this elegant late 18th century Federal style city house. |

HISTORIC SAINT LUKE'S CHURCH / Isle of Wight, Virginia No longer a functioning church with regular services, St. Luke's is much visited as an historic site. The Church added a parking and arrival area, a visitor center, restrooms and a gift shop to serve visitors. Rieley & Associates made improvements to the grounds of the visitor center, and redesigned the front entrance to the church. |

SUTHERLIN HOUSE, DANVILLE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS & HISTORY / Danville, Virginia William T. Sutherlin, a wealthy banker, tobacconist, entrepreneur, and prominent citizen built this house in the mid-nineteenth century. Historic photos revealed that an important element of the house's landscape, the original picket fence, had been lost. In 2005 the Garden Club of Virginia elected to restore the perimeter fence. |

SWEET BRIAR HOUSE / Client: The Garden Club of Virginia / Amherst, Virginia Sweet Briar House has been home to each of the college’s presidents since its establishment in 1906. On behalf of the Garden Club of Virginia, Rieley & Associates designed a front arrival court and wide brick walks edging the historic boxwood circle. The project also included adding both native and exotic trees to the original arboretum surrounding the house. |

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA / Charlottesville, Virginia After two terms as president, Thomas Jefferson returned to Charlottesville, where he designed and founded the University of Virginia. His plan for the grounds included ten Pavilions. Behind each Pavilion is a garden space, defined by serpentine brick walls. The Garden Club of Virginia recreated the gardens in the early 1950s. Since 2002, Rieley & Associates continues with the Garden Club's work in undertaking the refurbishment of Pavilion Gardens III, VI and X. |

WOODROW WILSON BIRTHPLACE & PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY / Staunton, Virginia In 1934, the landscape architect for The Garden Club of Virginia, Charles Gillette designed the terraced gardens at the rear of the house thus beginning what would be eight continuous decades of contributions from The Garden Club. Rieley & Associates has continued to work on behalf of the GCV refurbishing the summerhouses, wellhouse, and lower garden. |
