Monticello Plantation Roads and Paths

Research as well as archaeological explorations of Jefferson’s circulation system on Monticello’s southern slope formed the basis for re-establishing the historic physical relationship of the house to Mulberry Row and the quarters and industries that lined it. Cast stone steps, designed to avoid impact to the archaeological record preserved beneath, follow along the original route from the kitchen to the vegetable garden. Mulberry Row was realigned to return to its original location, while different color paving distinguishes modern from historic routes on site.
